Royal Canadian Mint Review

The Royal Canadian Mint or RCM for short is the national mint of Canada which produces all of Canada’s circulation coins as well as investment grade bullion for investors throughout the world. RCM is a Crown Corporation which means they are owned 100% by the Government of Canada and operate in the best interest of the people but also seek to make profits.

To accomplish this RCM produces some of the worlds most collectible Precious Metal and Base Metal coins as well as high quality Gold and Silver bullion bars for investors. Not only does the RCM produce their own bullion and coinage but they also offer Precious Metal refining, assaying and secure storage to its Canadian and foreign customers.

The History of the Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint first opened in 1908 as the Ottawa Mint; an out of country branch for the Royal Mint of London. They started out minting Gold Sovereigns for the British and did so until 1931. After the Ottawa Mint gained it’s independence from Britain, they were then renamed the Royal Canadian Mint and started designing and minting their own coins for the Canadian people.

In 1976 the RCM finished building a new facility in Winnipeg which provided them with ample space and machinery to operate at full strength and produce the volumes of coinage and bullion they needed.

Royal Canadian Mint Bullion Coins

The Royal Canadian Mint produces some of the finest Precious Metal bullion coins made of Gold, Silver, Platinum and Palladium. The RCM’s bullion coins are of the highest purities and they maintain a high standard. They are probably most famous for their Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coin which is available in Gold, Silver, Platinum and Palladium.

  • Obverse – The center of each Maple Leaf contains an image of Queen Elizabeth II with the denomination as well as the coins year of mintage. The top of the obverse reads “Elizabeth II”.

  • Reverse – The center of the reverse contains an image of the Maple Leaf (one of Canada’s national symbols). The top reads “Canada” while to either side of the Maple Leaf is the purity, which ranges from .9995 purity in Platinum and Palladium coins to .9999 in Gold and Silver coins. The bottom of each coin will contain the metal type both in English and French.
